Choose a Chip for Linux

I want to build a Linux computer! Does Linux run well on an AMD chip, or should I get an Intel chip? Can you recommend a good video card that will be easy for Red Hat Linux to recognize? What is a good motherboard and AMD chip combination?
-- Kevin from Cincinnati, Ohio

Linux runs well on an AMD chip or a Celeron chip; it will even run well on a 486. As for the video card, Red Hat's website has a list of hardware that's compatible with Linux.
What else do you need? Well, it wasn't long before we saw this question as an excuse to build a Linux box live on the set. Check out Kate's article on how we took a bunch of spare parts and turned them into a living, breathing Linux box!
